rs232 Barcode scanner+arduino+internet = ??

Hi all,

Not that I'm currently looking for another project, but hey aren't we all?

How about connecting an old serial barcode scanner to an arduino with ethernet capabilities and make a portable helping hand for your own inventories. That may be

  • making a list of your albums, with tracks and other info
  • making a list of what's in your fridge (the main argument for getting a commodore 64 in good old days...)
  • other ideas??

Does anyone see any challenges other than writing the scripts? Am I wrong in assuming that the barcodes are readily available on the internet?

The barcodes are going to be UPC symbols; at least in North America they are. If you can find a fairly complete UPC database, you should be good to go.
