Running Solenoid and Nema 17 through Motorshield V2

Good day,

I am a complete noob. I have managed to get my Arduino Uno to operate a Nema 17 stepper motor using a Motor Shield V 2.3.

I would now like to have a solenoid trigger after the stepper has moved a certain number of steps.
Stepper moves again – Solenoid triggers again, etc. until I stop it.

Can anyone help with the wiring and the programming. I have searched and searched and cannot find such instructions.

I am using a solenoid: TAU0730TM-14DC: 12v R 40Ohms Made in China.

Thanks, hope I am not asking too much. A recommendation for a good learning book would be great too.

If your Motor shield is running at 12V, you can easily wire up your solenoid as a "motor" and then just turn it on which will send a PWM signal to the solenoid (which is basically average it out) and turn on. Have you tried it? Normally, it takes more current to activate a solenoid than it does to maintain it so turn it own with a PWM signal close to 100% and then back off so extend the life.

Are you sure that your motor shield can drive your stepper motor? Data sheets?
