The datasheet says 4.5v minimum but I see it working below that.
How low can you go and still have reliable operation?
I'm using it for measuring the speed of a 50 Hz motor.

How long will have reliable operation, it won't. The devices has a set of specifications that are guaranteed by the manufacturer. To guarantee that certain parameters must be adhered to . Voltage is one of them. If the voltage is not in range it can work to giving errors and possibly being damaged.
