RX/TX and Ethernet adapter

Dear all,

If have an Arduino Uno and an a recent Ethernt Shield to connect it to the internet. I wonder whether the RX/TX pins are still available to communicate with a third device or are they busy with the communication between the Arduino and Ethernet shield? If the two device do not communicate this way, how do they?

I found the answer on
