RX0 interferes with programming (Nano)

Are RX0/TX0 somehow connected to the USB virtual UART in the Nano?
Whenever I have connected something (another hardware-USB-UART adapter), it gives an interference with the AVRDUDE programmer in the Arduino IDE (Timeout) when uploading:

avrdude done. Thank you.

Problem uploading to board. See https://support.arduino.cc/hc/en-us/sections/360003198300 for suggestions.

Yes

The general advice is not to use pins 0 and 1 for that very reason
