thanks for all the input on this thread.
the answer is this: the board hates being plugged or unplugged whilst power is on the usb socket.
connect verything up first & then fire up the pc and the board comes to life & talks to the pc every time.
Having spent some time browsing the forum I guess this is to be expected given the manufacturer - ho hum, we live and learn.
