Saitek Joystick and USB Host Shield

I am currently making an UAV as a fun side project. I am trying to use a Saitek x52 joystick and throttle by hooking it up to my Arduino MEGA 2560 via a USB Host Shield I purchased from Sparkfun. So far I've gotten as much response from the board as a fly trying to tickle a blue whale. I've looked at several codes from these forums, but since I'm a super noob at programming I couldn't tell what I'm really looking for. Could somebody please help me? I would very much appreciate it.

That much huh?

This statement really doesn't seem compatible with trying to develop a driver to drive a Saitek joystick.

What, exactly, have you come up with (that doesn't work)?

Well I tried plugging it right into the USB Host Shield, but I could not even get it read any kind of transfer when I hit the buttons or anything. Obviously I am missing a step (or a few), I just do not know what it is.
