Scary warning when buying an Arduino Sensor off ebay

MPU-6050 6 DOF 3 Axis Accelerometer Gyroscope Sensor Module GY-521 for Arduino

I was looking at this and thought, this would be cool for making self stabilizing toy robots etc...and thousands of them have been sold and the Internet is full of projects utilizing them.....

Yet...when you go to checkout on ebay you get this.....

Information.... It appears this item is restricted for export by the Department of Commerce under the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Export Administration Regulations, EAR (15 CFR, Parts 730-774). EAR restricted items may or may not require a license, depending on the end user and the ultimate country of destination. Directing the seller to export without complying with the regulatory licensing and documentation requirements is a violation of United States law. Please consult the BIS website at for more guidance. Also, please refer to eBay’s Military Items Policy for additional information.

After attempting to go to the recommended site and determine if there was any concern purchasiing them, I found the usual government quagmire of techo-babble and thousands of technical speak that seems to go nowhere.

In other words, you'd have to be a lawyer trained in this stuff to figure it out.

Anyone have any information on whether there's any risk in buying these?

Since this is an export issue, if you're worried about it you could pay a bit more to get one from a domestic seller.

Don't bother with the MPU-6050 -- it is an old sensor and has been superseded by parts that perform much better. Check out Pololu's excellent selection, which includes library code and examples.

Thanks for the link.

Very interesting site.
