Send a SMS but still count while sending

I'm doing a float count with my Arduino uno and gsm shield. I want it to text me after 4 pulses, and then text me the total number when there has been no pulses for 20mins

But when it sends the first msg which takes 10secs or so it is unable to count during that period

Anyone know a way around this?
