send an email without logging into an email account using arduino Mega

Is it possible to use the mega and a wifi shield to send an email without having to log into an email account? The former dean of technology of the local community college told me it used to be possible to send emails using http protocols, without actually needing to log into an email account.

Is this still possible? Does anyone know how to do it?

Sending email over HTTP is webmail. That's not what he's talking about - he meant SMTP; you'll need to find a sever that will let you do that, however - maybe the university mail server permits it from within the university network?

Because of industrial scale abuse by spammers, all SMTP servers now are locked down somehow - either by requiring logins, or restricting it to requests generated within their network. Otherwise, spammers would exploit it to send around advertisements for porn, pills, and pyramid schemes.

So if I take the arduino to the university, and put in the correct information to let the arduino connect to the universities network, I can use it to send an email to an email account that uses their servers?

I don't suppose you have any example code that shows how one might go by doing this by any chance?

I want to use the Wi-Fi to send a text message to my cell phone. I know I can email text messages to my cell phone for free. If your carrier is Verizon, the email address is yourphonenumber@vtext.com

I looked into getting a sim card shield, but I'm not paying for an extra phone line so my arduino can send me a text every now and then. Pay as you go is to much of a hassle. I want to use the buildings wifi to do it. I don't have a smart phone so using apps aren't an option.

I think this code would help a lot of people. Sending a text message to your phone using arduino would be pretty awesome.

If your university's mail server allows that - ask the university tech people.

No, I don't have code for that, but it certainly exists.

Sending an email with Temboo Link sending an SMS Temboo Link both wonderfully easy if you have a WiFi connection.

I looked into Temboo before, but as I mentioned, I do not have a smart phone. Temboo is an app isn't it?

I am a little unsure about how to word the question to ask the university people. Would the question be "do the university servers allow SMTP or webmail? If so, do I need any kind of security clearance to use that feature?"

Arduino Yún send SMS, email vai SSL, photo as email attachment, photo via mms.

Temboo is not an app, Temboo is extremely easy, do yourself a favor take 15 minutes and follow my link I gave previously and you will be sending email. I will help you with Temboo but you have to go there first until then I am signing off.

I notice you apparently provide them with your email account password, which might be suspect.
