Send and receive data through the USB Port directly

I would like to send and receive text from a PC to an Arduino UNO through the USB Port. I do not wish to go through a COM-style serial mechanism (UART); This requires extra cabling and hardware. I just want to send and receive through the same USB cable.

After reviewing the material on-line, I got the impression that the only way possible is to open a COM port and send and receive data serially.

Is there a way to do this by using the USB port directly?

Thanks,

Mo

Extra compared with what? All you need to establish a serial link (including power) between a PC and an UNO, is a USB cable.

Sounds like he wants to use a virtual com port via usb

Honestly, I don't know how that is done.

Don’t forget USB is a “ Universal Serial Bus” ..so any communication through it is serial by definition .

The Leonardo board can simulate a keyboard or mouse , not sure if that is worth looking at for you or in the direction of your thinking ?
