Sending MIDI

Hey everybody, I am very new to this so sorry in advance for my noob question. I am hoping to build my own midi controller, very basic, just an array of knobs with an led back-lit faceplate. Does the arduino mega 2560 send usb midi? If not, how would I get it to communicate with ableton or a synth plugin? Thank you!

Not directly. It can send serial MIDI with the addition of a MIDI connector and a resistor. http://arduino.cc/en/tutorial/midi

Use the above serial MIDI with a USB-to-MIDI adapter available via eBay for under $30.

Thank you John!

You could also try a Teensy, and Teensyduino (Teensy USB Development Board), or a Leonardo or Pro micro with something like TeeOnArdu (GitHub - fricklr/TeeOnArdu). Then your device could enumerate as a USB MIDI device.
