PIR has no range limit, you would probably need to shade it not to be confused by people moving about the
kitchen, and the worktop may prove to be reflective to far IR, so some experimentation. Ultrasound
would work too I think (beware the minimum distance limit for such sensors). Doppler radar sensors
would probably respond to everything in the room and be annoying.
