How can i increase the distance that my IR emitter can be away from the detector. At the moment it can only pick it up from a couple of inches away. Ideally it needs to be about 2 metres.

The most obvious way is to use a more power emitter or multiple emitters.
Another option is to use lenses to make the IR beam more focused
got to adafruit.com and look at the part numbers she uses for the IR LEDS in the TV-BE-gone, as well as the transistors that drive the leds. I have one of them and the beam seems to be good to about 75 feet or more on a fresh battery.
