Sensor for alarm

Hi all, I want to develop a circuit that has to use as alarm, my grandmother has a walking stick and in many times she forget it, I think it would be great if I will put some kind of sensor in the object and she keeping something that identifies her, so that the sensor detects the estrangement from this identifier that only she take him, I thought of a magnetic sensor for the cane and a magnet for my grandmother, she carried it in his pocket or something like that. The problem with this is that the recognition distance is very short, 10cm at most, I also thought of a RFID module with a tag, but the problem remains the same, can anybody suggest other solution for this thread? thanks in advance!

Piece of string from cane to belt on waist. When string gets tight, move closer to the cane.
Advantage: can pull on string to bring cane closer.
Advantage: needs no batteries.
Advantage: no confusing buzzer, vibrator, etc. needed.

Disadvantage: not quite as cool.

CrossRoads thanks for reply, I was thought for something wireless, without any kind of string or rope. using strings or something like that will be very unconfortable

I don't know, has to be better than replacing batteries all the time.

Does she have hearing aid(s) also? Maybe tie distance detector in with that somehow?

I use something called TagAlert/Smart-Tag for a briefcase.
If you get more than 20 feet an alarm goes off.

You do have to worry about batteries.

CrossRoads yeah I know it, the batteries is a headache, she does not have hearing aids, she listen perfectly.

LarryD it is a very good solution but I want to design something like that, with arduino one(or mega) and sensors and, if necessary , a signal conditioner circuit.

Nobody??

I have same problem with keys, glasses, credit cards, shoes, tool etc. The air is usually blue - it's an age thing.
I have a bit of an XBee network and was just going to add another node to attach to the miscreant keys etc. Button push to sound a locating button or feedback to say that the object has been located.
FM/AM transceiver would bo the same job.
Alternatively, have more than one walking stick, or a supermarket type tag detector fitted to the front door.
Near field technology?
