Sensor guidance for Run Challenge

I'm planning to build a project similar to the one in the video. However, I'm undecided about whether I should use a vibration sensor or a pressure-detecting sensor. Alternatively, is there an off-the-shelf product available that can detect footsteps?

I would really appreciate your help with this.

Here is the video for reference:

IIRC, most of them work off a pendulum of some kind. You enter your avg stride length and it then does the simple math.
I wonder if any of them use GPS?

You can use Piezoelectric Transducers.

From what I saw in the video, it seemed more mechanical — like it works through some kind of vibration or movement.
Thanks for your response!"

This could actually work. But I wonder if there would be any issues with detection if I attach it under the plate?

I did a similar project for my granddaughter, using electric piezoelectric, I mounted it between an E.V.A rubber and a sheet of metal.

PS: See my video:

Yes, movement that is why they use a pendulum.
