Serial backpack on lcd

so i bought a generic 2x16 lcd and an external SparkFun SerLCD serial backpack. The supplier assured me it would work with my mega 2560, since they sold me the 2560 i assume they were telling the truth.

when i connect the backpack up and run the first code on > http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Learning/ < i get this.

the backpack might not be making proper connection, since i have to get it in the right position b4 it turns on even, but im not sure where and how to plug it in properly so i can solder it since there are four possible connection orientations…

The lcd is the nely nt-c1627A. It has 2 rows of connection pins, labeled CM1 and CM2... this wouldn't mean i need 2 serial backpacks to control each line!!!???
