Serial Communication UART for SmartCar Control via ESP32

Hello guys,

I'm trying to remotely control a SmartCar via remotely via Wi-Fi, so I found this code at this address and adapted it little bit to my specific situation, becaused I am using TB6621 motor driver and not L298N:

Since the original project was concieved to run without an Arduino, but only with the L298N motor driver (so connected directly to the esp32-cam), obviously the commands to move the car are not working here.

All is working, the camera connects and stream, but I want control the car.
So I tought, that I should just read the string wich is printed in the serial console (Forward/Right/Left/Backwards) from the Arduino and then create some if/else conditions in order to control the movement of the car. The problem is , that the direction strings are printed in the serial console but I cannot read them in the Arduino. I tried several ways but I cannot communicate this values to the Arduino.

Here the Arduino code:

//#define RXD2 33
//#define TXD2 4

/*
#define PWMA 5
#define PWMB 6
#define BIN1 8
#define AIN1 7
#define STBY 3
*/

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(9600);

  /*
  pinMode(STBY, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(PWMA, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(PWMB, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(AIN1, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(BIN1, OUTPUT);
  digitalWrite(PWMA, HIGH);
  digitalWrite(PWMB, HIGH);
  */
}

void loop()
{
    // read the incoming byte:
    //incomingByte = Serial.read();

    // say what you got:
    /*
    Serial.print("I received: ");
    Serial.println(incomingByte);
    Serial.print("Aivailable: ");
    Serial.available();
    */
    //Serial.readStringUntil('\r');

    if (Serial.available()) {
    String received = "";
    //received = Serial.readStringUntil('\n');
    received = Serial.readStringUntil('\n');
    Serial.println(received);
    Serial.setTimeout(300);
  }

      /*
      //se quello che leggo dalla porta seriale = muovo macchina
        {
          switch (incomingByte) //movement direction control
          {
            case ('forward'):
              // Set Forward Motion

I just keep receiving -1, or nothing at all as a value in the serial console.

What is wrong here?

By the way, 100% the wiring is correct because was working previously with the manufacturer code (only that code didn't do what I want).

Thank you for your help.

Look at the documentation for "Serial.available()" and see what is returned and the various reasons. What does a -1 return tell you?

Hi,

probably that no value is being returned. Online I find only cases where is returned 0 though. Anyways, this doesn't help me to find why no value is received.

In that case you need to look at the sending end of the connection.

Perhaps you need to continue to test until something is received.

Most users tend to avoid using the "readbytesuntil" function for serial UART transfers, as it is blocks other tasks in your code from being performed until an end character is received, or a timeout is finished. You should also avoid using "String". Character arrays are much more flexible.

Have a look at example 2 of Serial Input Basics instead, which is both non-blocking and uses character arrays. I will give you an example;

Receiving node:

// Example 2 - Receive with an end-marker

const byte numChars = 32;
char receivedChars[numChars]; // an array to store the received data

boolean newData = false;

void setup() {
    Serial.begin(9600);
    Serial.println("<Arduino is ready>");
}

void loop() {
    recvWithEndMarker();
    showNewData();
}

void recvWithEndMarker() {
    static byte ndx = 0;
    char endMarker = '\n';
    char rc;

    while (Serial.available() > 0 && newData == false) {
        rc = Serial.read();

        if (rc != endMarker) {
            receivedChars[ndx] = rc;
            ndx++;
            if (ndx >= numChars) {
                ndx = numChars - 1;
            }
        }
        else {
            receivedChars[ndx] = '\0'; // terminate the string
            ndx = 0;
            newData = true;
        }
    }
}

void showNewData() {
    if (newData == true) {
        Serial.print("This just in ... ");
        Serial.println(receivedChars);
        newData = false;
    }
}

Sending node:

void setup() {
    Serial.begin(9600);
}

void loop() {
Serial.println("left");
delay(1000);
}

Have a long read through the rest of the example's in that tutorial. they are extremely helpful.
