Thank you for the replies. I used a 150 ohm resistor and jumped 5v pin to the reset pin.
This is a perfect solution for me. My count is retained after disconnecting and reconnecting the serial interface.
I also will probably use the EEPROM memory function as well. The learning curve is endless. And that is a good thing.
I am a retired rookie at this micro processor stuff. And every thing is a challenge. But I am learning.
