How to rectify the serial monitor problem indicated by "Board at COM1 is not available"?
Serial port check indicated nothing using COM1 on my Win7 PC.
Can the Serial Monitor be assigned to another port?
Thanks,
Zinzkt

Serial Monitor uses the port you have selected in the Tools > Port menu.
That selection is "grayed out" (unselectable).
Further suggestions? I'm new to the IDE.

If you have a clone Uno or Nano (aka bought on eBay, AliExpress, Banggood etc)
Here you go: http://www.wch.cn/download/CH341SER_EXE.html
If you are running WINDOWS then COM 1 is a default COM allocated by windows system itself.
Your motherboard may have a COM port or a chipset supporting COM ports.
COM 1 on windows is very very rare to be an Arduino and can almost always be ignored for that purpose.
There are multiple posts about that and you can find them and probably an answer to your issue by using the search provided to you with the small magnifying glass at the top right of the page.
Also jumping into other peoples posts can be frowned upon so I would also suggest reading the sticky posts at the top of the forum please as they also detail other information people trying to help you would find useful in giving you the best answers.
OhBaby:
I'm trying to upload a new sketch to an Adafruit ProTrinket, I was able to do it at least once before, and now I'm getting an error saying no USBtiny device can be found.
Did you press the reset button to put it into bootloader mode?
OhBaby:
Not sure why COM1 is visible and checked. Can't unselect it. Does not go away when I unplug the Pro Trinket.
Unlike the more common Arduino boards, the Pro Trinket does not create a serial port on your computer when you plug it in via the USB cable. If you need a serial port, you will have to connect an "FTDI" cable or adapter board to the Pro Trinket:
