serial monitor problems

i’ve seen this problem in the forums, but the one that was relevant for Windows XP seemed to “magically work” after a while, and mine does not!
i can upload my program to the arduino, which reads in tags from the parallax RFID card reader.

i turned on my serial monitor and then get:

tried restarting, tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. nothing!

hej,

i have no solution for your problem, but on the otherhand there are better terminal programs, so you don't have to use the arduino program, i realy like Bray's terminal program

I wonder if somehow the uploading process is holding onto the serial port and preventing the serial monitor from using it. What happens if you upload a sketch that sends serial data to the computer, then quit Arduino, then run it again and turn on the serial monitor without uploading a sketch first?
