Serial Monitor problems

I'm trying to use the Arduino IDE to communicate with an ESP2866-01 module via an FDTI USB interface. There is no actual Arduino board involved here. So this is just a question about about Arduino IDE serial monitor.

I'm trying to get the "ok" prompt to show up from the ESP8266 module for the AT commands. But all I get are java errors.

Here are the errors I'm getting:

java.io.IOException: jssc.SerialPortException: Port name - COM4; Method name - setEventsMask(); Exception type - Can't set mask.

Any suggestions on how I might correct this problem?

Thanks

I've been at this for over a week now. The computer has been turned off and back on several times.

Thanks, but I already did that. It didn't help.

I'll try using Putty.

I just tried using Putty but no luck.

Here's what happens with Putty.

I launch the Putty window, click on the Serial radio button. Type in COM4 and I tried both 9600 baud and 115200 baud, but in both cases when the serial window opens up it doesn't respond to anything. It won't even take in keyboard inputs or respond to the enter key. It just sits there dead until I finally close the window.

I'm really getting frustrated here. It seems that no matter what I do nothing works.

Shouldn't the putty window at least take keyboard input? It just sit there totally dead.

I also double checked using Device Manager that my serial USB is indeed on COM4.

Also, I had downloaded the lastest copy of the ESP software previously using a Flasher program and that all seemed to go just fine.

I also have two ESP8266 modules. One I upgraded the software on, and the other is just as it came. I can't communicate with either one using a serial monitor.

I've been at this for over a week and it's really getting frustrated. I just want to see the "OK" prompt when I type in AT. But I can't even get that far.

It won't even take in keyboard inputs or respond to the enter key.

Unless your (as yet unseen) code echoes back what has been entered, this is to be expected.
