I have a mega that has be running for a few weeks today I was making some changes to the sketch and uploading it. When I was done the serial monitor opens but will not display anything. I have the right com port and the right baud rate. I have used the reset still nothing I had a spare mega and uploaded the same sketch it works fine. I have tried it on another computer different com with the same result no display
Any ideas
I have noticed that on my working spare the yellow LED flashes continually
The same LED on my other board (the one that the serial monitor does not work) is on solid all the time

You mean about the TX/RX leds right? those leds should light only when there is data flow(serial communication through USB) between your pc and arduino... So on your working arduino , the led flashes because there is a serial communication with your computer, everything is OK. Now i don't really know why the led stays continually on on your other board, looks strange and not normal... Have you tried uploading an empty sketch?
It started working again after I left if off for awhile. Not sure if this cleared it or not but I powered it up holding down the reset button. All is working now
