Have a look at the examples in Serial Input Basics - simple reliable ways to receive data. You can change the value of numChars if you need to receive more than 32 chars.
An Arduino can work very much faster than serial data can arrive so there should be no trouble receiving long messages even with the normal 64 byte Serial Input Buffer.
