Serial Port Greyed Out

I have an arduino uno that works great on my mac. However, I'm traveling out of the country for a while and will only have my netbook (asus 1008HA). Its running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. I've installed arduino from the universal repository, however the serial port option in the program is greyed out. Also of note, there is no arduino uno board option in the program. Does the repository have an older version? How do I get the serial (usb) port to work?

Last time I looked the Ubuntu repository had version 0018 which doesn't work with the Uno. Does running dmesg from the command line say its found the beast ?

Mine says :

[ 3543.384362] usb 1-5.3: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 23
[ 3543.478822] usb 1-5.3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 3543.480003] cdc_acm 1-5.3:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

Download the linux version 0021 from the main arduino site and extract it into your home folder. And see it it runs from there.
