I have tried the

"3) Delete /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext

  1. Delete /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

  2. Delete /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/*

  3. Delete /Library/Receipts/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.pkg

  4. Delete /Library/Receipts/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext"

and I’ve reinstalled 2.2.10 of FTDI but I still get the error. Is there some way to determine what is holding up the serial port? I’ve also tried chmod 777 in a lock directory.

That is almost certainly not the right serial port. That looks like a Samsung mobile modem connection or something.

It should be something like /dev/tty.usbserial-XXXXXXXX

I'd recommend against using the "cu" device anyway.

and you are most certainly right. I was having this problem with a diecimila and the proper serial port wasn't showing. I switched to a '09, the right port came up, plugged the diecimila back in and the port appeared again. Oh well the 2 hour struggle was a good lesson in terminal.

Now back to programming the line following robot...
