Setting current limit for stepper motor

My stepper motors are rated 4.2 amps per phase. My driver has current limiting dip switches that allow either 3.8 or 4.5 amps. Should I use 3.8 and be a little underpowered or set it to 4.5.

My gut says set it at 3.8, but I would welcome feedback.

Thanks,
Nathan

I would try 3.8 and see if the motor can do the work that you need.

However I suspect the difference between 4.2 and 4.5 would not cause a problem for the motor. Just check to make sure the motor is not overheating - keeping in mind that they are designed to run hot (uncomfortable to touch).

The lower current setting will be much kinder to your stepper driver.

Thanks for the advice.

Note that steppers tend to run hot anyway, they don't reduce heat dissipation when stationary, they
are working just as hard then and when moving.
