Setting up a Sequential Shifter with hall sensors

Hi, Im very new to Arduino. Im looking to setup a sequential shifter with hall sensors but I dont know where to go. I planned on using some code for a DIY sequential Shifter but it uses microswitches so I assume it would require altering for hall sensors. Im not sure where to start. Thanks.

Help us out. What is your conception of a sequential shifter?

I originally planned to use this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-w8Zu3LSlE to build the shifter. But then I bought some hall sensors and plan on having neodymium magnets on the lever of the shifter that when pushed forward or backward would trigger the hall sensor to change the gear either up or down

A hall sensor and a microswitch have the same digital input to your code. They read HIGH or LOW and you act accordingly.

Put together a circuit on a breadboard to test the components. Power the Hall switch and verify you can read its state and in turn drive the onboard LED as proof. Use that to increment a counter - displayed on the serial monitor.

Where does the output of the Arduino go?
