Shop customer counter

The idea would be to create a small device that can be placed above the entrance of a shop with the purpose of counting the current number of customers inside a shop. This could be connected to a website presenting the current "filling" of a given place.

Example:

You are living in France, you enter the website and provide the zip code and address. The website looks for the nearest shops and presents them as colored dots on the map (small store of 50 sqm has 30 customers inside then the dot would be red, if 5 customers than green). You can also track the color during the day (historical part).

The purpose would be better to decide when to make your shopping (safer time) and for the employees it could also give a track about the current number of customers and have more control about the limitation - forbid new customers to enter the store as long the limit is reached.

Proposal for device:

  1. Arduino + WiFi/GSM module for connectivity
  2. Two ultrasound or infrared sensors placed in close proximity - allows to count incoming/outgoing customers
  3. Battery + 3D printed / standard cheap box

What do you think ?

Stay safe!
