Short Circuit prevention

Hello everyone!!

I was developing a starter shield for Arduino Nano which has ports for various sensors and servos.
when i was testing my shield i unfortunately connected servo in reverse order. this caused smoke from servo connection. My arduino nano and bluetooth module (HC-05)is not working. Is there any way to prevent this kind of short circuits??

If you use keyed connectors on the shield and servo it will make it impossible to plug them in backwards.

Regarding protecting from damage caused by shorts, I thought this page had some good information:

Not sure how you protect equipment from user mistakes.

Make sure power is off when making connections, quadruple check connections before you turn on the power.

Experience varies directly with equipment ruined.
