Short Circuit?

I'm extremely new to electronics and I spent most of the money I saved for learning on this Arduino UNO board. Before it was working perfectly but now for some reason I can't seem to connect. On my Mac there are no serial ports that indicate Arduino, and on my Linux (Ubuntu) box there are no serial ports at all indicating my board isn't connected. I'm installing Arduino on my father's Windows box to see if maybe it can connect, but then I realized that maybe it had short circuited.

When I plug in the Arduino the LED that says "ON" is on, it just won't connect on either one of my computers. So, how would I know if it had short circuited or not?

Try a different USB cable.

Other than the USB cable, is anything connected to the board?

I don't have another USB cable at the moment. But I plugged in my UNO into a Windows computer and it's still not reading it. There is currently nothing connected but it still runs the program that I had installed on it.

Press and hold the RESET button while connecting the USB cable. While RESET is held, does the Uno show up in System Profiler?

If there was a short circuit, OSX would give you an error along the lines of "USB Device is drawing too much current"...
