Should I Get An Uno

I've had a Duemilinove 328 for the last year and have been very impressed with it. However I have been reading about the new Uno, with it's faster code transfer. But apart from that is there much difference to the Duemilinove and is it enough to warrant buying one.
Thanks
Matt

Well, I like the fact that on a MAC or Linux machine you no longer need to install a driver. this makes it easier for beginners.
I believe their is also more flash memory available on the Uno. I ordered one already.

Well there are lots of reasons to have more then one Arduino board, but maybe not just to have a faster upload speed. Now if the Uno could help me with getting fewer compiler errors, I would be on one like white on rice.

Thanks for the fast response!
I think I will order one because as Lefty said there's lots of reasons to have multiple Arduinos especially since my projects are getting bigger and better, which I hope to share on the forums soon.
Thanks again

If you only have one arduino then yeah, probably.

Otherwise, just to replace what you currently have... no.

You can have the extra flash on the "normal" as well it's just the optiboot loader.

Thanks guys...

Your sure can. This is an open forum for all and you will find users here from all levels of experiance and skills and most are more then happy to help newcomers along.

I think I'd go for a real Duemilanove at a knockdown price - my supplier of choice is selling real ones at around the same price as Chinese knockoffs on Ebay to shift them. Its still a 328.....

Linux has drivers for the FTDI built in and I can always put Optiboot on to gain the extra flash. I experimented with it a while back and I had one or two issues, I trust they've been sorted since its going into real production boards.

Yeah im with Pluggy there, now's the time while while everybody is clearing out Duemilanoves, at the moment the Uno doesn't offer me enough incentive to get one, im quite happy with my Duemilanove and mega board for my own needs

I picked one because I was using a Chinese clone (I actually didn't know at the time) so it's more of a way to show my thanks and support!

The other good reason is that they use a programmable micro to handle the USB / serial bit. This will allow, some time in the future, for the Uno to look like other sorts of USB device to your computer. Like joysticks & controllers or MIDI interfaces and the like.

In case no one has tried it, yes you can upgrade a Duemilanove to a Uno by burning the Uno bootloader onto it. OK it still has the FTDI USB chip, but you get the extra flash memory.....

And doing so completely screws up my home monitoring system with the LCD panel. It displays garbage and the heartbeat pin 13 LED I have on it starts flashing weird. Back to the good 'ol Duemilanove......

Nobody saw a thing

I tried optiboot a while back and it caused problems back then. One issue I brought up on the google code site was never resolved. I abandoned it then, it still has problems it seems and I abandoned it again. The amount of flash available was an improvement but if the sketches don't run as expected.....

It worked OK 'dry' it went flakey when I plugged in its shield with all the connections to my sensors and LCD panel. Putting the Duemilanove bootloader back cured it. I suspect the Uno would do the same as I can't see the different USB making any odds. I don't need another Arduino so I'm not currently in the market for a new one to chase it up and little desire to kick up a fuss. Its a pretty complex sketch and trying to pick the bones out to suit a new bootloader doesn't appeal.
