I am prototyping a sensor and pump controller and want it to report data to a remote server and eventually be able to control pumps over the internet as well. I don't want to use Wifi for setup/password change reasons. I am trying to use an ethernet gateway with Xbee network, so that I can program the nodes before sending them out, then it is just plug and play.
I was attracted to Digi's Connectport X2 for Zigbee Gateway, mainly bc they tout everthing that is possible. Digi is a large company and I expected to be able to level the learning curve a bit, but my experience has been the exact opposite.
The gateway is like putting on a straight-jacket. Everything about the gateway is about uploading to their "Device Cloud", which was under a different company, but now is under Digi. The Device Cloud is cryptic at best, the data updates when it feels like it (it does detect changes, but only after reporting several readings of the old state). Under the UI, I can't see how to access my data to make my own graphs and do the analytics I need to do on my sensors.
I've spend so much time trying to learn this platform that I am wondering whether it's time to jump ship and find a new board and build my own platform. I cannot even find in the documentation how to poll pins or read serial. The documentation is as scattered as a plate of spaghetti in a train wreck.
Has anyone had success in using Digi's gateways? Should I stick with it or is there a better option out there?
