I am new in every way. I work in maint. in a jail and am looking for a way to control shower times for the inmates.
I have seen units from New Zealand that look perfect but am looking for a cheaper ($320 + shipping per unit) way. That unit also runs on 240v and i would like to use battery power. I have also found a battery product in USA that you install right on the shower head that looks good but i need something the inmates can not get a hold of.
I want to control the hot water. When the water starts to flow i want a timer to give them a set amount of time then shut off the hot water. I also need to have a reset time so they can not just start over again.
My idea is a flow sensor to activate the unit. then use a solenoid to cut off the water. What product do i need for the controls? Any other great ideas?
Here in the US, we'd call that "cruel and unusual".
thank you for the info. that gives me a place to start.
You are welcome.

If it's good enough for a sailor it's good enough for a convict!
if you have a 2 minute warning, that would help.
you can cycle off-on, and then run for 2 more minutes. they will get the idea.

But in Guantanamo Bay, I guess it would be seen as quite benign.
You could do this with cheap turbine flow meters.
I believe one Mega can handle six of these. I don't think there is any need for a clock, it could be all done with flow whereby a momentary cut off is a 5 litres-to-go warning. I assume you already have low flow showerheads but, if not, a similar warning may be given if the flow rate is too high.
