Does anybody know the part numbers for the sil sockets used on the arduino? , or another supplier in the UK.

Not the same as the Arduino ones, but i use these http://uk.farnell.com/samtec/bcs-150-l-s-te/receptacle-2-54mm-vert-50way/dp/1667505, you can get smaller sizes too

A knife.

hehe, It ends up sacrificing one of the sockets, but it does the job

The male strip pins can be cut right between the pins with a knife or diagonal cutters, but the females should be cut right in line with the pin of a sacrificial pin position and then file smooth to the last desired pin position.
