I have a school project that requires a circuit to be built on a breadboard using an IC. Sorry if this doesn't have much to do at all with Arduino since I will not be able to use one for this project.
I've been overwhelmed with complicated concepts shown on the internet about Integrated Circuits, am running out of time and I really need simple ideas to build a breadboard circuit.
In terms of my skill level: I know beginner Arduino commands/concepts, basic electronics knowledge, basic soldering skills and have learned a thing or two about IC's on youtube. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
You could easily make a descrete AND gate on a breadboard.
I should've mentioned that I used tinkercad to light a LED using the IC 7408. What would you recommend after doing something like that? Something a bit more complex maybe.
It would help us to know what kind of IC you could use or would be interested in using. The 555 timer is quite popular. A voltage comparator would be informational. A NAND gate oscillator also comes to mind.

I'm deciding on what components to buy. Interested in using the previously mention IC 7408, mostly because it's the only one I've learnt about. The original idea was to build a sort of "timer" where a 7 segment display would count from 0 to 9 (10 sec) using the 555, after each time it counts an LED would light up and the counter would start over until 3 to 5 LEDs were lit up. I've come to realize it's far more complicated than I imagined...
A bit difficult to wrap my head around the circuits but the 7404 seems to be a good option so far. Thanks.
That’s why I thought it’s a good starting point… it uses a few very fundamental concepts you can learn from ![]()
…and is incredibly simple and low cost.
Perhaps a simple 555 timer that blinks an LED.
The 555 blinks (or a 556 beeper) is good idea.
For logic, you could build a small counter out of flip flops.
