Simple wire gauge/size question

Hey guys, I have a simple question regarding the use of large and small wires.
I’m powering a fairly large motor from a battery. I want to measure the voltage of the batteries with a voltage splitter indicated on the diagram with a resistor. The problem is, the wires going to the motor are about 7mm in diameter; far too large to be soldered to my perfboard. I want to use smaller sized wire to measure the voltage, will that work?

Yes

Yep, the only problem is the mechanical one of attatching the wires in a neat fashion. But if you can connect at one end or the other that's easy.

Does the resistor have a purpose?

I guess it represents two resistors with a centre tap for reading the voltage.
