They would have been aware I wasn't using Chrome either, it was the form of the advert that caught my eye. It worked, I'm giving Chrome another try, it had too many issues last time around......
I'll probably return to the known safety of good ol' Firefox eventually 
Go with SRWare Iron, exactly like chrome but it doesn't send info on everything you do to google.

Who looks at ads these days. Iron has an inbuilt ad-blocker too...
Well it's also extra data and everyone is so fussed about download speeds and computer speeds, every little bit of extra speed you can irk out of your line (when it's not being used by google) is a good thing.

I look at ads. They generate revenue, revenue is good for the web. If everyone blocked ads they'd come up with some other way to monetize the web (like paywalls). I look at the ads to keep the web free for you.
I also have a 50mbps line. Downloading movies at 30mbps doesn't look to have any impact on my web browsing, sending a few stats to google won't make much of a difference.

True but I'd rather not be encouraged by adverts to buy lots of stuff I don't need. No matter how stringent you are about what you're going to buy and when, adverts still affect your decisions and I'd rather stay as far away from that as possible.

I used to live in Cumbria so I know your pain. I was only 200m from the exchange though so got a decent 7+mbps out of my 8mbps connection. The lack of cable or LLU or 3G was a tad annoying.
Heh, I'm lucky to get more than 3mbps here. The max that I could apparently get here is about 5mbps but that's still not great.
I remember when there were four students sharing a 512mbps connection and the only time we had a problem was a bit of lag when playing quake 3 online.
It's all down to content rich web pages and, as you mentioned earlier, tracking. I'm quite happy with content rich stuff but it would be good if low bandwidth versions were more readily available.

Well I have to say I am kinda going this way but Pale Moon has decreased my 'Firefox' loading time a lot and I need some of the addons for Firefox.

You can get FF to open in 4.6 seconds? I'm impressed. I've never been able to do better than 10-15 seconds and sometimes 20. (Multiple data points on several different systems)
Well yeah FF can be something like that on my slow computers.
I think it completely depends how you have it set up too. Turning off the automatic updates for most things helps.
