My software crashes every time I go to File Open, or File Save. Everything else works, I can program boards, print, open examples, etc. I've downloaded the latest Java and USB drivers. Any ideas?
Is something else on the machine being used at the same time as the Arduino IDE, sharing the files?
I'm not sure I follow. I have a printer, bluetooth dongle, logitech wireless mouse, and external harddrive running. I have to shut down bluesoleil to run the arduino software, but that's it. If you could let me know what to look for I'll gladly try to find it.
Thanks,
Steve
Just a guess...
Brief Background
Arduino expects all Sketches to be in the "Sketchbook location". This is just a directory on your computer. I have no idea where the default location is. You can determine the current location by...
- Start Arduino
- Click the menu item File then Preferences (or press Ctrl , [Control Key + Comma])
- Look for "Sketchbook location" in the middle of the dialog box
Things to Check
- Does the Sketchbook location exist?
- Is the directory (and subdirectories) read / write from the account you use to run the Arduino IDE?
- Are there any files in the directory?
If you find a solution to the problem, please report back.
I checked the folder and it does exist. I am the only account and I'm the administrator. It should be noted that it crashes when I hit Browse in the dialog box also. So I figured it might be a problem with Java. I uninstalled Java and everything ran beautifully, all the save, open, browse worked fine. I reinstalled Java with a fresh download from sun.com and it crashes again. Any ideas? It's listed as Java 6 update 16 in the Add/Remove Programs list.
I suppose I should list some specifics about my computer at this point. I have an Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+ and I'm running Windows XP 32bit SP3. Here's the latest error report in the Arduino program folder, I hope it's ok to post this here:

Hi,
I recently adquired an Arduino Duemilenove Board, and when I runned the IDE to try the first examples, guess what?
A lot of time displaying the credits, then error, then IDE appears, but the interaction was very slow. This happens when it didn't crash.
For solving this erroneous behaviour I ended the process related with BlueSoleil, and now it is OK (I doesn't crash when open or save)
I'm using an Intel Core 2 Duo 1,88Ghz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia Go7400, Logitech Trackball, Logitech Hub, Pleomax Keyboard, Windows Xp Pro SP3. The only thing that I did for putting it to work was kill the BlueSoleil.exe process.
Cheers,
João Quintas
Thanks for the reply. I had the same problem with it running slow, I have to kill BlueSoleil as well, but unfortunately it doesn't fix the crash. Th only way I've fixed the crash so far is to uninstall Java. I'm sure it's a problem with my JRE, I'm not smart enough to figure it out though.
Steve
You're in territory unfamiliar to me so I'm not going to be much help. Just a guess...
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\DivX Shared;C:\Program Files\Arduino\java\bin
"C:\Program Files\Arduino\java\bin" seems suspicious to me given this from the error report...
VM Arguments:
jvm_args: -Xbootclasspath/a:C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jre6\lib\deploy.jar;C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jre6\lib\javaws.jar;C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jre6\lib\plugin.jar -Xmx32m -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dkernel.background.download=false -Dkernel.download.dialog=false -XX:MaxDirectMemorySize=64m
And this is really suspicious...

Is Java running from the Arduino folder or the Java folder?
Anyway, after a fresh boot, try renaming "C:\Program Files\Arduino\java" to "C:\Program Files\Arduino\java_deleteme" then test.
I tried it, and is still crashes. Here is a log of the crash after I renamed C:\Program Files\Arduino\Java

Thanks for the reply, I hope I can get this fixed one of these days. Unfortunately, I'm in way over my head on this one.

Unfortunately, I'm in way over my head on this one
So am I!
One more thing seems odd... On my computer (Vista 32) there are no Java directories on the PATH. I doubt it will help but you could try removing "C:\Program Files\Arduino\java\bin" from the PATH.
Other than that, I'm stumped. :-?
SOLVED!!!!
From what I can tell, Arduino runs it's version of Java in Arduino\Java folder by default. When you rename the folder, it ran the other copy I have installed (Version 6 Update 17) from Program Files\Java. In either case, it still kept freezing. I uninstalled Java 6, deleted Arduino, and re-installed Arduino. It didn't freeze. I re-installed Java 6. It froze. I renamed the Arduino\Java folder, and now it works. Just to make sure, I named it back to the original, and it freezes.
Must be an incompatibility between the bundled version of Java in the Arduino software and the other one I have installed. I don't get it, but now I can save my code instead of pasting form freakin Notepad. Thanks for all your help everyone, hope this helps out someone else with the same problem. I don't get why it happened, I have a very generic setup with a honest copy of XP Pro and am running all normal run-of-the-mill software.
Thanks,
Steve
Just wanted to extend my appreciation for your thoughts on this issue. I was getting this error simply by attempting to run the Arduino software on XP Home SP3 on a new Acer Aspire One.
My specific error was:
"The procedure entry point time could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCR71.dll"
Renaming the java folder inside the Arduino folder was all it took, now it's working great! ;D
The thanks goes to Coding Badly, I'd never have figured it out myself. Glad it helped!
