Hey I'm seriously considering buying an arduino. I have a chromebook and i see that the web editor which seems to be the only viable way to code on chromebooks for arduino is 99 cents a month, if you buy a starter kit do you still have to pay for the web editor because if so that will be a major turn off and really stop any chances of me ordering one

Yes. Did you see some information somewhere that said the starter kit comes with a free subscription to the Chrome app? If so post a link to it.

Buy a cheap laptop and run Linux on it.

Isn't there a hack to run Linux on most chromebooks?
Ah yes-"crouton". How to Install Linux on a Chromebook and Unlock Its Full Potential

Requires enabling "developer mode", so might not work on shared chromebooks.

I can't understand why businesses are allowed to sell computers (and phones) that prevent the owner from accessing anything he wants on it.
