Did Google give you only examples where something always blows up?
You can't connect it directly. You need a solar lipo charger. Google "solar lipo charger" and you will find loads of them to buy.

While it would be fun to put together everything from parts, I wonder if it's worth it. The Sparkfun thing costs 25 $ on its own. You get a 5V 8000 mAh lipo with an 80 mA solar panel for 20 $.

An 80 mA solar panel won't do a damn bit of good. It would take over 100 hours of full, direct sunlight to charge an 8000 mAh battery.
