solenoid driver

would the irfz46n be a acceptable replacment for the fet in this schematic

having a problem figuring out all the FETS

also i have a couple 4n27 optoisolators. i think i read somewhere on this forum you could use optoisolators to drive solenoid, but i can no longer find the info. Any ideas?

thanks

Is my question that obvious, or just plain silly?

I guess the answer is: sure? I dont see why a vanilla IRF510 wouldnt work as well. For that matter Ive run an array of small solenoids using the ULN2003 or ULN2803 darlington arrays. Only good for .75A IIRC. From what Ive read an optoisolator should work too but Ive had no personal experience with this. If you use a fet you wont need that resistor R1. And of course the pinout is not compatible. You need a schematic like this one: http://www.csulb.edu/~bevans2/schematics/mosfet.jpg Well that wasnt a very clear answer!

thanks, that actually answers my questions on the fets after a little more research. when i looked at transistors and fets the pins where named different and i wasnt sure why that was. Thanks for the poke in the right direction. The reason i was asking about the IRFZ46N is because i pulled 12 out of a APC that went bad and wanted to see if i could use them at save a trip anyway. Wired it all up and worked great. with the blink sketch. Now i just want to need to figure out a way to use processing to change to on and off time of the solenoid. Thanks again.
