I guess the answer is: sure? I dont see why a vanilla IRF510 wouldnt work as well. For that matter Ive run an array of small solenoids using the ULN2003 or ULN2803 darlington arrays. Only good for .75A IIRC. From what Ive read an optoisolator should work too but Ive had no personal experience with this. If you use a fet you wont need that resistor R1.
