I'm trying to hitch up three solenoids to my arduino but, not being any good with electricity, have met with failure. The parts in question are to used in conjunction with the programme mentioned in this thread; http://www.arduino.cc/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1207236037. I ordered them from uk.farnell.com (man. part no. 120 420 620 620). They are 12v tubular push jobbies. My arduino will be powered from the usb cable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Monty, you could use the tutorial info on driving relays for your solenoids, such as this: http://www.arduino.cc/playground/uploads/Learning/relays.pdf
Your solenoids need a little over 300ma so a 2n2222 or equivalent should be ok
You're a godsend mem and, technically, a god member too. Which sounds a bit dirty to me. Cheers.
Nothing godly (or dirty). But having been up the learning curve, just happy to help ;)
If you don't have a 1amp 12v power supply lying around, this one from Maplin looks to be well priced: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ITAG=SPEC&ModuleNo=32754&doy=7m4#spec

Just to clarify, your Arduino can be powered from USB, but you will need an external power supply for the relays, because the USB is only rated for 500mA.
