Sony Ericsson T68i Data Cable - Where to cut?

Hi,

I was hoping someone could clear something up for me. I've bought a Sony Ericsson T68i so that I can send/receive SMS with the Arduino. I've also bought the USB data cable which I plan to cut and separate the wires to directly connect the RX/TX. However on the cable itself are two casings, one near each end.

Now I understand that there is some signal conversion going on somewhere because the computer would want to operate using RS-232 and the Arduino needs to be using TTL, but I'm not really sure where about the conversion(s) is/are taking place.

There is also a small circuit board inside the plug that goes into the T68i, I am assuming that the conversion happens here but then I really don't know what the other two casings are for. A picture of the cable can be found here:

Where do I want to cut the wire in order for the signals to work.

Thanks,

Alex

Why cut the cable. You could simply use a female connector for the USB end and pick up the data signals there. That way you keep the cable intact and gives you a sound basis for your experiments. Something like this :-

I've never used USB with the Arduino but from what I've heard its more complicated. How would I access the RX/TX from the USB D+ and D-?

You won't find TX and RX inside that cable, as only the USB signals will be wired up. You may find that the large connector on the one end (not the usb connector) will have the pins for these signals, in which case you can try to solder wires on to them if you cut apart the black shell.
