Hello,

I would like to make a "graphic equalizer" for my amp, basically I just want to show a basic frequency distribution of the music being played on an LED matrix and some 595's. I was wondering how people sync LED's to music, do I need an audio decoder IC or can most of the work be done with software. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Im thinking relatively simple, doesnt need to refresh or resample extremely quickly just something that moves with the music and is interesting to look at.

check out the LM3914, it's an LED bar-driver ship that you might be able to get very cheaply. I think there are also other dedicated chips around for graphic EQ display. If you go with Arduino as the driver chip, then you should look into the MAX7219/7221 series.
