Speaker mute with Arduino

Hello,

I have a special question:

It is related to audio but I think it suits better into this forum because there is no processing.

I want to build a studio mute for my mixer. That means that a normal analogue audio signal (chinch from a mixer) should go into the arduino and leave it without any processing or change to be sent to a chich socket that is connected to my studio monitors.

If the value of a certain variable is changed, the signal must not be routed through the arduino to the socket so the monitor will be muted until this variable's value is changed to another certain value again.

Is this possible when using an arduino mega? I want to avoid using a relais for switching the signal on or off which would also be a possible solution.

Thank You for your help!
