SPLC780D or S6A0069 LCD'S compatible with HD44780?

Hi all, I have made a project using a HD44780 20x4 LCD display and now need some more. I can find some using SPLC780D & S6A0069 but not sure if they will be drop in replacements?

These are the part numbers for the controller chips and both of them appear to use the Hitachi instruction set. This means that they should be software compatible with programs written for your original LCD board.

The Sunplus device seems to have a different CRGAM which looks like a superset of the Hitachi CGRAM. This means that some of the characters other than the usual numbers, letters, and punctuation may be different. The Samsung data sheet that I have does not have a CGRAM listing.

Whether the LCD modules that you have found, the ones using these chips, will be a "drop in replacement" depends upon how they are configured.

Thanks Don, which of the two would you say would be nearest to compatible with the HD44780 controllers?

I really have no idea since I don't have any displays with either device. Unless you are doing something unusual I suspect that either would be OK.
