yes that sounds like it might be worth investigating... although I have to say that the things you have mentioned (spark generators and five-minute sine wave power supplies) are things one tries to avoid in a design. I understand the torture-test part, but at the extremes, like a +/- 10V sine wave at 1HZ or less, things are bound to fail.
