Stand alone Arduino will not work with Crystal?????

I built an led matrix that works great with the duemilanove board. Then I wanted to add a stand alone Arduino on a custom PCB board. I couldn't get this to work.... Then I tried an adruino stand alone on a bread board and still wouldn't work. but then I accidentally left the ground off before the .1uf caps to the crystal and It works?? and I tried it on the matrix and IT WORKS??? But I cannot get it to work with the crystal hooked up to the ground no matter how I wire it up? And yes I wired the stand alone on a bread board exactly like whats on this site. My only thought is that maybe I have bad crystals or caps that I got from ebay.? Any thoughts? Or is there just something I do not know about yet. Still Learning thanks

22pF caps with a crystal. 0.1uF will prevent it from oscillating.

Make sure fuses are set for external crystal also.

Ahhh I see. and now I see it in the schematics.. I bought a couple bare bone parts kit off ebay and the .1uf is what they sent. I wasted probably 6-8 hours retracing connections and searching.. LOL Well that was a dumb move on my part. Thank you so much!

The 0.1µF caps were for decoupling the power (Vcc, AVcc) not for the crystal.
